People of Kenya: Taveta

 

 

The Taveta tribe is one of the Bantu ethnicities in south central Kenya in East Africa’s Taveta district inhabiting mainly the lands between Tsavo National Park, and the Tanzania border, up to the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The people are sometimes referred to as the Wataveta, which is the plural name of the people in their own language.

The population of Taveta people is around 15,000. They (the Taveta) are often agriculturalists, though many have turned to cash crops in this modern age. Many Tavetans are occupied by commercial and subsistence farming with the main cash crop being bananas, cotton, sugarcane, exotic and tropical fruits especially mangoes, avocadoes and many horticultural produce. The religion of this Kenya tribe is mixed, with some having converted to either Christianity or Islam, and some have retained their traditional spiritual ways.
